Harvestore silo challenge

Okay, here's a pesky question that shows up whenever driving through farm country. So you know the bright blue Harvestore (oxygen-limiting) silos that are relatively common. Some of them have large US flag decals up near the tops of them. In the Jane Smiley novel A Thousand Acres, it's mentioned that the Harvestore dealer puts that flag up on the silo when it's paid off. I've heard that version elsewhere as well, but there does not seem to be any justification for that story on the web.

Normally I have the Google-Fu but on this one, no luck in my searches. So here's the challenge, can you find if that story is true using only the Internet. (Sure, you could call Jane Smiley or the local Harvestore dealer, but let's stay online for this one.)

It's also interesting to note that lots of farmers are selling off their silos and the Harvestores are mostly headed to Scandanavia.

  1. I just had this conversation with my mother today as we were roadtripping through Wisconsin. My Grandmother states that this is true (which is usually justification enough for me) but wanted to confirm it on the internet.. Haven't found anything yet..

  2. I own two harvestores and also work for a harvestore dealer, that statement is false, as a matter of fact you have to pay extra for a flag to be ut on when it is built or if the dealer had a special promo a the time of sale they may include the flag free, as they did when I bought my harvy.BTW I wouldn't be without my Harvestores!

  3. This is not true.once the silo is built the flag cant be added as the flag is partof the glass fused to the steel when its manufactured and its up to the owner if he want the flag or not,Also you can add the farm name to a sheet too when ordering it.

  4. Interesting to hear from owners (and those who work for the dealer). It does look like that "flag equals payed off" rumor is false. Thanks much!!!

  5. The flag is up to the farmer at the time he places his order it can not be added later as it it is part of the glassing prosess .
