For a while this will be focused on my trips to the South Pole to work on ARA and IceCube experiments as a physicist and instrumentation scientist from the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center at the University of Wisconsin. Here Dr. DuVernois will ponder the world, the web, and all things in the middle. If that isn't a noble enough project, I'll also post interesting links. This web journal is held in lieu of a writing journal and continues my UMN, MySpace, and Facebook blogs.

South Pole Traverse
The South Pole Traverse (SPOT) came in over the weekend. They drive large tractors up from McMurdo to the South Pole Station taking about 30 days to get here. They pull their own sleeping and eating accommodations and a large supply of fuel for the station. (South Pole requires vast amounts of fuel for heating, vehicles, and electricity. Most of it is delivered at staggering expense by air, by the New York Air National Guard LC-130s that also bring the passengers and the cargo to Pole. The traverse is a much more economical way of delivering the fuel.)
