For a while this will be focused on my trips to the South Pole to work on ARA and IceCube experiments as a physicist and instrumentation scientist from the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center at the University of Wisconsin. Here Dr. DuVernois will ponder the world, the web, and all things in the middle. If that isn't a noble enough project, I'll also post interesting links. This web journal is held in lieu of a writing journal and continues my UMN, MySpace, and Facebook blogs.

Heavy equipment
All of the heavy equipment is named. That's Mary Lou, the D8, plowing snow.
The view from the station looking out towards the satellite communications, with Mantis crane, palletized cargo, and cable reels in the middle.
New York Air National Guard ski-equiped LC-130 Hercules. Such an ugly, ugly plane, with a tail that seems too big for the rest of the plane, and those non-aerodynamic skis and (can't see from this picture) spine antennas. I think they started building these in 1958 or so, and they're still the way of dropping equipment into improvised runways like the South Pole skiway.

nice post! thanks! caster
ReplyDeleteThese are surely a lot of heavy equipment! Those who usually work with these know that it's always important to conduct regular maintenance to make sure that each equipment is working in tip-top shape.
